Cellular Manufacturing

Cellular manufacturing uses work cells to create efficient process-based arrangements of people and equipment that allow smooth flow of product. The equipment is arranged in such a way as to minimize handling and movement of parts. This helps to maintain low inventory and reduce the lead-time for the customer.

Cellular manufacturing is a major building block of Lean Manufacturing and is a tool used to develop One-Piece flow in production. This approach means that a product or part passes through all stages of production in a continuous sequence without batching or delay. If batches are used, there are delays as parts wait for the entire batch to be completed at each stage of the process.

The classic cell design is a 'U' shape in which products move in an anti-clockwise direction (right to left across a person). Ideally, the person who starts a product through the cell is the same person that completes the final operation. This allows rapid feedback on quality issues.
