Set-up ReductionSet-Up Reduction is also referred to as Quick Changeover and SMED.SMED or Single Minute Exchange of Dies is the ability to change a process set-up from one product to another in single-digit minutes (0-9). Toyota used this successfully to reduce the changing of large injection molding and stamping presses from 4-8 hours to minutes. The process is a simple and powerful technique that shows operators and technicians how to think about the process of changing a die (mold). It is not always possible to reduce set-ups to single minutes, but it is usually possible to dramatically reduce the time required in almost every case. By reducing the time it takes to switch between products on a production line, the process becomes more flexible, batch sizes can be reduced and responsiveness to the customer increased.
