Value Stream Mapping

One of the most important and fundamental steps in creating a lean organization is Value Stream Mapping. This is a simple way of looking at the flow of a product (or product family) as it moves through an operation.

The mapping typically begins at the shipping dock and works back upstream through all the processes involved in making the product. Cycle times, process availability, inventory and work-in-process are some of the information gathered. The process also maps the flow of information that drives the product through the company.

By building a Current-State map of the flow of parts and information for a product family through an operation, areas for improvement can quickly be identified. Processes can be better connected, inventories eliminated and improved flow of production initiated. A Future State map can then be drawn up that redesigns the process to eliminate waste. A clear and concise plan for implementing the changes is also developed.

The Future-State map and the plan for implementation can be used as management and communications tools to show everyone involved the objectives and key milestones and performance levels that must be achieved.
