Shanghai has to be one of the most built up places on the planet. There are more tall buildings here than we've ever seen and they are still building! 20 million inhabitants with a more open attitude to international business than anywhere in China. It is a major center for international companies to set-up. We look forward to going back - Orla loved the shopping!
Our hosts Felix and Jennifer made us feel very welcome and showed us around some of the sights of Shanghai. This is one of the entrances to YuYuan, an old shopping district in the city that is great for souvenirs.
In the center of YuYuan is an old tea-house built many years ago....
Even the Queen of England has taken tea here - that's her in the photo on the wall. Now the place will be really famous after Orla has stopped by!
South of Shanghai is the city of ZhouZhuang - also known as the Venice of the East. It is a maze of small streets with canals and bridges built 400-500 years ago around the home of the [then] richest man in China. It is a major tourist attraction for both Chinese and foreigners alike. The ladies on the boats sing just like the gondoliers of Venice - only at a slightly higher pitch.
Orla trying her hand at weaving on a loom that was several hundred years old. It turned out to be easier to buy wall hangings than make them.
This is one of the gods in Chengxu temple in the middle of the town. The original building dates back to 1083 AD. And you thought that the 'bird' was invented in America......
This was the very patient audience for my seminar in Shanghai. Felix worked very hard to translate my English for two days for his colleagues at BMP and did a very good job. They are excited about their molding operation and I look forward to working with them again soon. |
