| A chance to take a break after a hectic few days in Kansas City and recharge our batteries before heading for Japan. San Francisco is quite a nice town to visit but is cool at this time of the year. We had lunch at Alioto's - the first restaurant at Fishermans Wharf in 1938. No trip to San Francisco would be complete without a visit to the island. Alcatraz is surprisingly close to the city shoreline and obviously has an amazing history. Inside it is actually quite small - it held only 260 people on average. The cells are incredibly cramped and must have been tough for anyone kept there. Al Capone's cell is marked and the cells from which the famous escape was made in 1962 are shown (Clint Eastwood was in the movie), complete with holes in the wall and photo's of the fake heads that they made. The Golden Gate Bridge on the north side of the city is actually red but is spectacular nonetheless. It is now continuously guarded by soldiers as part of the on-going terrorist threat to major buildings and national monuments. Sad. |
